This painting explores notions of fragmentation, disengagement, agency, and alignment. The lightbox, which holds the light found deep within one’s soul, is guarded by the sleeping figure. A lack of desire and courage to deviate from rigid cultural expectations have caused her to become her own obstacle, preventing her from unlocking that light that will set her free. The winged mermaid is a symbol of alignment in the narrative, and stands in contrast to the disengaged, sleeping figure.
